Wagon. SUV. Crossover. "Wagonoid".

The new 2017 Subaru Outback has been called all of these things--and more. It's one of the most unique offerings in Cleveland, Beachwood, Shaker Heights, Hudson, and Cleveland Heights, because the Outback is more rugged than your typical wagon, but definitely wouldn't fall easily into the category of "SUV".

Though Subaru has been labeling the Outback as a "Crossover SUV" on its official website, true fans know that the Outback can never truly shake it's long heritage of being a wagon.

So the question remains: is the Subaru Outback an SUV? Or has it retained enough of its wagon-based persona to still fall into the same category as models like the Audi allroad and the Volvo XC70?

That answer may be up to the person behind the wheel.

Chris Jackson, at MyCarData, had this to say about the iconic Outback:

"Subaru must be feeling pretty bemused about the whole trend [of combining SUV and car attributes, because its Outback has been here the whole time, and it's the very epitome of what crossovers are trying to accomplish. The Outback first appeared in 1995 to compete with the growing tide of truck-based SUVs. Since it didn't build trucks, Subaru simply applied its already-proven all-wheel drive expertise to a toughened-up version of its Legacy wagon, and the rest is history. Now in its fourth generation, the Outback gets larger, bolder and tougher. If anything the Outback's more like an SUV than most crossovers are."
